You should never tell them when the other parent is coming to pick them up that you need them to stay. Never put them in any situation where they have to choose between mom and dad.

You should be honest to the children the whole time. You should inform the children about what they need to anticipate. You cannot allow them to feel like any of it is their fault. You will want to make sure that you do not make them feel bad about themselves. As long as you find a way to support your children through the hard times, you and the rest of the family.
